De voormalige stadsschouwburg, bekend als de Bonbonnière, is van oorsprong een door de Jezuïeten gebouwde kerk.

The former municipal theatre, known as the Bonbonnière, was originally a church built by the Jesuits.

In 1787 werd het oude Jezuïetenklooster Achter de Comedie bijna helemaal afgebroken bij de aanleg van de gelijknamige straat.

In 1787, the old Jesuit monastery on Achter de Comedie was almost entirely demolished to make way for the construction of the street of the same name.

Maastricht has a long-standing tradition in education. During the Middle Ages, the city had several schools affiliated with chapters and monasteries, but only the former Latin city school has been preserved, located at Achter de Comedie 8.

He builded a mezzanine floor across the nave of the church, creating space on the upper level for a theater hall, while the ground floor was used for other purposes, such as a redoubt and a hall for concerts, dinners, balls etc.

Just as the Nierstrasz family formed a dynasty in Maastricht's theatre world as directors of the city theatre, the Zeguers family had been connected to the 'coffijhuys' or the 'Café du Théâtre' since the early nineteenth century.

The so-called 'White Hall' was established in the late 19th century as a foyer for both the audience and performers, serving as a meeting place before there was a designated artists' lounge.

In 1982 kreeg de toen 35-jarige Maastrichtse kunstschilder Gèr Boosten de opdracht een beschildering te ontwerpen voor het stalen brandscherm dat kort tevoren was geplaatst in de stadsschouwburg Bonbonnière.

In 1982, the then 35-year-old Maastricht painter Gèr Boosten was commissioned to design a painting for the steel fire curtain that had recently been installed in the city theatre, Bonbonnière.

Het plafond in de theaterzaal, zoals nu nog steeds te bewonderen, werd beschilderd in opdracht ven de gemeente door de bekende Limburgse kunstenaar Charles Eyck (1897-1983) in de late jaren 1950.

The ceiling in the theatre hall, which can still be admired today, was painted by the renowned Limburg artist Charles Eyck (1897–1983) in the late 1950s, commissioned by the municipality.
