Originally, “the house of the city” was located in two buildings in the Grote Staat, known as “de Lanscroon” and “de Liebaert”. This is where the council met, where city receptions were held and where the central warehouse for firefighting equipment, the prison and the city wine cellar were located. In 1593, it was decided to build a new town hall on the site that now comprises the Market Square. The Market Square had to be created before construction of the new large town hall could begin, and it took until 1664 before the city council could move in and until 1684 before the tower was completed.
In the hall of the town hall, there is a small exhibition that tells this story.
On Saturday, Frank Steijns plays the town hall carillon between 12:30 and 13:30.
