Roundel ‘De Drie Duiven’ - The Three Doves - was constructed around 1516 when a stone wall was built around the ‘Nieuwstad’ - New Town - on land stolen from Sint-Pieter. It is a ‘sister’ to the roundel ‘Haet ende Nijdt’ - Hate and Envy. ‘De Drie Duiven’ served as a platform for canon and also contained two casemates, one of which has been preserved. On this roundel in 1638 five heads of executed supposed traitors of Maastricht were displayed to deter the Spanish enemy. From that moment on the roundel has been known as ‘De Vief Köp’ - The Five Heads.
After years of restoration work the roundel will be opened for the public during the Open Monuments Day. The visit will be guided by staff of the building companies Koninklijke Woudenberg Maastricht and Laudy Bouw & Ontwikkeling.
