St. Matthias Church, registered as a national monument in 1966, dates back to the year 1351 and has an unusual and precious inventory. The parish originated in the Middle Ages as a split-off from the parish of St. Servaas. Much of the current inventory comes from the dissolved monasteries of Maastricht.
The church has a rich interior with the following interesting elements:
- Church furniture: a neo-Gothic high altar from 1859 designed by Karl Weber. The Marian altar comes from the Church of St. Servaas. The baptismal font dates from the 18th century.
- Wooden statues, such as a St. Cecilia from Jan van Steffeswert (1500-1525) and a Pietà from around 1550. Copper chandeliers, (donated by Petrus Regout), neo-Gothic chandeliers, candelabras and paintings, stencil paintings and wall frescoes from various periods.
- The windows in the presbytery are by Atelier Nicolas of Roermond. In the side aisles and the baptistery there are stained glass windows by Charles Eyck from 1959.
- Three-manual organ from 1808 by Maastricht organ builder Joseph Binvignat. Parts of tribune and draft portal are from the old Augustinian church.
- Funerary objects: tombstones against the interior and exterior walls.
On Saturday (5:30 p.m.) and Sunday (6 p.m.) there are Masses in the Matthias. Sunday Mass is in English in cooperation with the International Community Maastricht.
