The seven-yearly pilgrimages to Maastricht and Aachen originated in the 2nd half of the 14th century. What did those medieval pilgrimages look like? Where did the pilgrims come from? Why did the pilgrimages originate precisely in that period, when the plague was catastrophizing this area? What did Maastricht look like at that time? Maurice Essers takes us back to the Middle Ages in the time of the pilgrims and places the origins of the Maastricht pilgrimage in a European and religious context.
