OSTCRYPT SINT- SERVAASBASILICA

During Open Monument Days, visit the east crypt of Saint Servatius Basilica. The east crypt is one of the oldest parts of the church, but unfortunately not freely accessible to visitors. For several decades the crypt has been set up as a so-called lapidarium: a space in which a collection of - special - stones has been gathered. (Lapis is Latin for stone.)

The stones on display in the crypt date from all periods of the church's building history, and even from before. You will find, among other things, a fragment of a Roman sarcophagus, early Christian tombstones, Frankish sarcophagi, a Romanesque capital, and the remains of the Gothic rood screen that once separated the choir from the nave.
